When one corner of the mouth moves differently: separate expression habits, jaw movement, and sudden neurologic signs
Hello, I am Dr. Hong Myung-hwi, Chief Physician at Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam.
Some people notice that one corner of the mouth rises less in photos or during speech. First separate a longstanding expression habit or jaw-movement difference from pain, altered sensation, or a sudden change.
Separate a longstanding difference from a sudden change
Check older photos, whether it appears only with certain expressions, and whether a difference remains at rest.
Sudden one-sided facial weakness, slurred speech, or weakness in an arm or leg requires immediate emergency medical evaluation.
Review jaw movement and pain, not only the mouth corner
Record whether the jaw shifts when opening, whether chewing causes clicking or pain, and whether you chew mostly on one side.
Facial muscles, the jaw joint, and neck or shoulder tension should be reviewed separately rather than assigned one cause.
Record rest, smiling, and speech under the same conditions
Camera angle and lighting can exaggerate asymmetry. Keep the head level and record both rest and a gentle smile from the front.
Also note when it began, recent dental treatment or injury, pain, and sensory changes.
A consultation prioritizes timing and function
A face does not need to be perfectly symmetrical. Sudden change and difficulty chewing, speaking, or closing an eye matter more.
At Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam, we review expression, jaw movement, neck and shoulder condition, symptom timing, and daily habits together.
