When the jaw shifts while talking or yawning: what to record
Hello, I am Dr. Hong Myung-hwi, Chief Physician at Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam.
The face may look similar at rest while the chin shifts to one side during speech or yawning. Do not infer the cause from appearance alone; record when it began, pain and sounds, the opening path, locking, and difficulty chewing.
Record when and where the jaw shifts
Separate movement at the start of speech, during wide opening, and while closing.
We first observe the opening and closing path and chin position from the front, then check whether the difference appears only in photos or repeats during movement.
Track pain, sounds, and locking separately
A click without pain is not the same as pain, stiffness, or limited opening.
Record whether discomfort is in front of the ear, at the temple, or in the chewing muscles; whether it is worse in the morning or evening; and whether the jaw has locked.
Include chewing habits and neck posture
Separate days with one-sided chewing, hard foods, clenching, or prolonged downward head posture.
We do not name one habit as the cause of facial asymmetry; the bite, jaw function, and neck and shoulder condition should be examined together.
Separate sudden changes from persistent functional problems
Sudden facial drooping, slurred speech, or weakness in an arm or leg requires emergency care and should not be treated as a jaw habit.
At Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam, we review movement records and pain, sound, and locking history and explain whether dental or medical evaluation should come first.
