Key points
For recurring summer headaches, review sleep, hydration, meals, neck tension, and warning signs that require urgent medical evaluation.
Hello, I am Dr. Hong Myeong-hwi, Chief Physician at HyungInJae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam.
During summer, moving between heat and air conditioning can coincide with a heavy or throbbing head. Late sleep, skipped meals, low fluid intake, and prolonged looking down may occur on the same day.
I do not label every headache as heat-related. We record when it starts, how long it lasts, whether it is one-sided, and whether neck tension, nausea, or light sensitivity occurs.
Track headache timing and accompanying symptoms together
Note whether pain begins on waking, after afternoon work, or on days when meals are skipped. Include sleep, water and caffeine, meals, exercise, menstrual cycle, and pain-reliever use.
A diary is not for self-diagnosis. It helps you describe patterns accurately to a clinician.
A stiff neck does not mean every headache is caused by posture
Long periods on a phone or computer can tighten neck and shoulder muscles and occur with headache. Adjust screen height and avoid holding one posture for too long.
A sudden extremely severe headache, limb weakness, facial droop, speech or vision change, high fever with neck stiffness, or altered awareness requires urgent medical evaluation.
Korean medicine consultation reviews your diary and current care
We review sleep, digestion, stress, neck and shoulder tension, medicines, and pain-reliever frequency. Tests or treatment from another specialty may be prioritized or continued when needed.
Seek medical care when headaches become more frequent, wake you from sleep, persist after a head injury, or lead to frequent pain-reliever use.
